Engine, Type 1
Type 1 fire engines are used primarily for structural firefighting. They are equipped with large diameter supply hose, have very high capacity pumps, and are designed to operate on paved surfaces. The District staffs 3 front-line Type 1 engines each day and has 2 reserve Type 1 engines that are staffed when needed by off-duty personnel and volunteers.
Arcata Fire District's apparatus include engines, a ladder truck, a water tender, command vehicles and other specialized equipment for rescue and support functions. Apparatus are categorized, or "typed" (i.e. Type 1, Type 2) by capability to assist with resource ordering. Resource typing provides emergency managers with the information they need to request and receive the specific resources to mitigate an emergency or disaster.

Engine, Type 3
Type 3 fire engines are designed to fight fires in areas unreachable with Type 1 engines. Type 3 engines are equipped with four wheel drive, rugged suspension and high wheel clearance for steep, off-road conditions. The District cross-staffs 1 front line Type 3 engine on a daily basis.
Water Tender
The Water Tender carries 3,000 gallons of water and is designed to protect the residences in rural areas without fire hydrants. The Water Tender has enough basic firefighting equipment to act alone during times of natural disasters. The District cross-staffs 1 water tender on a daily basis.
Rescue Vehicle
The rescue is primarily used to respond to a variety of rescue incidents. This vehicle is outfitted with tools and equipment for emergencies requiring: Rope rescue, vehicle extrication, vehicle stabilization and heavy lifting. At the company officers discretion, this vehicle is also used in place of an engine to respond to locations that are difficult to access with an engine.
Utility Vehicles
Utility vehicles are primarily used to transport and support chief officers responsible for operational command and control functions. These vehicles are also used to respond to emergent and non-emergent incidents in place of engine at the company officers discretion.
